Hat Etiquette

  • Get noticed by tipping your hat to a lady – raise your hand to the rim of your hat, and give a gentle nod and a friendly smile. Don’t be creepy.

  • Inside Rules – remove your hat when inside a house, building, restaurant, church, etc. (or anywhere it is uncomfortable or with limited space, like on an airplane or in your car).

  • Public Places – Hats are allowed in public places, such as lobbies, elevators, parking lots, lanes & alleys.

  • Respect – Always remove your hat for the National Anthem or for a passing funeral procession. Remove your hat to show respect.

  • Seated at an Event – Always remove your hat if it will block or impair the view of someone behind you at sporting events, the theater, a conference, or seated at a concert.
